Northgate Community Has a Voice for Change

Welcome to the Northgate High School Blog. The sole purpose of this blog is to gather information from parents, students, teachers, staff and administrators who would like to share ideas about improving Northgate. The blog will also provide information about MDUSD's, and Northgate's, failure to provide a quality education for our students. If you believe everything is wonderful at Northgate feel free to write that in a post but please understand that this blog is about change. No form of name calling or intimidation will be tolerated, your post will be removed. This is a serious blog for serious people who want to make a difference. Members of the school board view this site, this link can easily be sent to the Superintendent, this is your opportunity to tell them what you think needs to change at Northgate.

WOW - Things might be changing at Northgate

Interim Principal Carl Toliver held a Leadership retreat this month. Staff and parents were represented at the retreat. Mr. Toliver speaks of building a stronger culture at Northgate, increasing Advanced Placement opportunities, and improving communication. I like the way he is tackling these issues and others. This is like a breath of fresh air after years of neglect. Tell us what you think of the job Mr. Toliver is doing. Below is a small portion of the retreat outline.

LEADERSHIP TEAM RETREAT
April 8, 2008

TODAY, I WANT…

· to see communication improve
· communication to improve and know that change is possible
· to keep our word
· to build trust/accountability, honesty, consistency, and create a “we”
· flexibility to accept change and appreciate change
· each person to feel valued
· step away from adversarial position -- students are #1
· to understand how we got here
· get back to a sense of “we”
· to figure out limitations and have compassion and empathy for each other (understand the role/jobs of our peers)
· to honor one another—everyone on the team is important
· to close distance/drain of feeling that we never do enough
· to look at parent/school relationship and to mobilize/utilize parents to be proactive

I am happy to see the NG administration addressing the issues of school culture. We can begin to check one thing off a very long list.

After meeting with Mr. Toliver on an issue with my child, I believe he is exactly what Northgate needs at this time. He impresses me as a man of great character who will have a positive influence on the students and staff.
