Negotiations - Is the offer on the table good?

Northgate's PFC website has posted a report from the District Negotiation Team regarding the current agreement between the District and MDEA regarding teacher compensation, class-size, and retirement benefits. Are the negotiations going in the right direction? Is the package on the table a good deal? With drastic state budget cuts is the current deal even viable?

The current items agreed upon are relatively low cost. The extension from 60-63 allows teachers to retire later and will hopefully keep our teachers around a little longer. The current contract specifies that if a teacher retires by 60, they receive benefits for their spouse during retirement (up to 65). The new agreement is to extend that date to 63. So the impact, is solely the cost of the spouses benefits for a few years.

The other agreement is to allow time for the schools to balance classes at the beginning of school and avoid unnecessary grievance filings.

The district is not in a position to make an overall compensation offer. For details on the budget situation, see http://mdusd.blogspot.com (Ending Fund Balances and Reality).
